What is the one thing that keeps you from living your dream? It's a great question. But perhaps it's not the right question. Last month I was standing in the checkout line at the supermarket reading a national lifestyle magazine. A headline on the cover blared: "When is your Ship Coming in? The one way to find out what's keeping you from what you really want." Intrigued, I opened the magazine and began to read the article. In the very first paragraph, the writer asked: "What is the one thing that keeps you from living your dream?" It's a really good question. It's a great question. But it's not the right question. What is the one thing keeping you from living your dream? First of all, what is your dream? Is it something you've always wanted but seems to allude you, a faint desire that occasionally distracts you until you dismiss it and go back to your normal - daily life? You must be doing something wrong if what you really want, your dream, isn't materializing in real life. For just a moment take another point of view. Drawing from an ageless wisdom that is perhaps thousands of years old, the Toltec of ancient Mexico taught that the human mind is alive and one of its main purposes is to dream, not just at night but while we are awake too. They claimed beliefs are a filter the mind dreams through, awake or asleep, thus your reality is created not by what happens, but by what you choose to believe. Today, quantum physics, medical science and countless spiritual traditions tell us that we are the masters of our own reality, our waking dream. What is keeping you from living your dream? Nothing. You are living in your dream - a wordless state of being - constructed by
your own beliefs about everything. As shocking as it may seem, if you are worried, anxious, frustrated or steeped in emotions and repetitive inner voices that don't feel good, your belief system may be a self-constructed dream that is now dreaming you! To be convinced that you are not living your dream just isn't true. You are precisely living your dream through a lens of beliefs you agreed to that fabricates your perspective day in and day out. Okay. I am the master of my reality and I want to make some changes so I can begin living that far-off dream that has always alluded me. What's the first step? The first step is awareness. To make any change you have to be aware of the exact thing you want to change. To make a real change you have to get to the core of the issue, and the core issue related to any behavior you want to modify is always about what you believe. So all I have to do is change what I believe, right? It is and at the same time is not that easy. What you believe is the culmination of your experiences, agreements, and the investment of your faith. Belief is an energetic entity with memory, intelligence, and most importantly an emotional point of view. To change what you believe is not simply a matter of deciding to believe something else. To change what you believe is not about changing your mind, but more accurately changing the way you feed the old not-serving-me dream. To begin the process of change uncover what you actually believe, not what you think you believe. I frequently tell people that hidden beliefs create barriers to success and true happiness. They say, "Oh great! If they are hidden how am I going to find out what they are?" It's easy. Just look, the answers are all around you. Your reality is distorted by the experiences, beliefs, and agreements that are unique to you and only you. You project that out into the world. More often than not what is happening in your life - right now- is a perfect reflection of what you believe. PERFECT! Rather than asking, What is the one thing keeping me from living my dream? Maybe the question you can ask yourself is: What have I created? What kind of life am I dreaming right now? What is my own unique perspective and is it keeping me from realizing my deepest desires? If I was aware that I'm the master of my own reality, what would I choose? Imagine: You can create the life you dream of beyond what is true today. Impossible? Not really, because you create the life you dream of every single day. If it's true that we dream our reality, awake or asleep, then the act of choosing what to believe, consciously, is an act of power. To be conscious of our ability to create reality - to know that reality is not just what happens to us but rather what we decide it means - is simply awareness. Awareness is a portal to change. Awareness of the awesome force of belief brings into being enormous possibility. By recognizing what you believe and re-creating the beliefs that hold you back, you can bring bring about long-lasting changes improving every part of your life: health, relationships, income and career. What is the one thing keeping you from living your dream? You are living your dream. You are the creator of the dream and therefore the one with all the power. The power to make it different. The Power of Belief.
