My Journey to Teotihuacan

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be loved unconditionally? To be loved, honoured and respected exactly the way you are? Have you ever considered it possible?

I know it is possible because I have experienced it and it was the most powerful moment of my life. The impossible became possible on a trip to Teotihuacan with Teacher and Toltec Master Ray Dodd. Granted, this experience could probably happen anywhere, even in a Wal-Mart parking lot. But taking a Power Journey to Teotihuacan with a Toltec Mentor creates an opportunity so conducive to love, that the most miraculous occurrences are commonplace.

What I learned was earth shattering and amazingly simple. It’s the best part of this story. I learned that the Love I had been seeking is within me and it’s always been there. It is like returning home, a fire rekindled. Now I know what unconditional love feels like, I can use it as a reference point to move towards whenever I need it. And if I can do it, so can YOU!

Prior to Teo, I had it all or so I thought. A successful career, family and financial independence. Rewarding yes, but something was missing. I longed for real connection, community, appreciation and acceptance.

I grew up in a large family. As the oldest, and being a girl it was simply expected that I help out. With child-like exuberance I went about my duties with a passion. I was certain that if I worked hard and did a good job, my parents would reward me with love and I’d get the attention I wanted. The Prize. When it didn’t happen I began to develop strategies aimed at getting the prize – try harder, do the right thing, be good, make them proud. My frazzled parents didn’t notice and my enthusiasm waned to cynicism and sarcasm backed by the belief that being loved for being me, was impossible.

Decades later, despite the appearance of success and happiness, in contemplative moments I wondered: Who am I really? What does it mean to be a woman? Why doesn’t anybody love and appreciate me? What did I do wrong? How do I really connect with those I love?

I’d watch movies of true love and weep as they touched the wound made by the thought that I was unlovable. I believed it would never happen for me. I wanted to know real love, real happiness. I began to realize no one out there was going to rescue me but me. It was time to take action.

I had heard about Teotihuacan after I began working with Ray Dodd, a Toltec Mentor trained by don Miguel Ruiz. He put me in touch with others who had been there and they described their experiences as incredible – a place where dreams come true –a place so far beyond our understanding words could not begin to explain it – pure heaven on earth. I was sceptical but willing to embark on an adventure of self-discovery to an exotic place.

I wasn’t disappointed. Upon arrival in Teo, I felt what I can only describe as a powerful beckoning, a force drawing me to itself. That evening my dreams were magical filled with a Cirque de Soleil type figure playfully leading me to the gates of the archaeological park where the ancient pyramids of the Toltec reside. At the entrance he turned and faced me. His face looked like black star speckled obsidian, a volcanic mineral that the entire area sits on geologically. As I gazed into his face I sensed the unfathomable depths of eternity. I took the step and entered the unknown. My life would never be the same again.
