"To till your personal soil, create
a nurturing environment
I love spring! I make the Spring Equinox a personal holiday of my rebirth—an annual observance of the possibility of renewed energy and life. This year, on March 20, at 1:26 Eastern Time marks the Spring Equinox indicating the end of winter and the beginning of spring—when the daylight and darkness are equally divided and the Northern Hemisphere shifts toward increasing light. Whether it is the crocus poking its way through the snow, or the delicate blooms of the fruit tree, spring signifies the ceding of winter’s slumbering self-investigations to sowing the seeds of transformation in spring. Recently, on a brilliantly clear early March day, I flew from Atlanta to New York. The countless shades of Earth’s brown patchwork were a metaphor for the myriad of possibilities lying dormant, ready to be revealed in all its sacred variations. For those walking the path to contentment and happiness that accompanies personal freedom, it is the challenge of making wise choices that offers the opportunity for growth. Which of the seeds collected during the barren winter months when the bare structure of our belief system is exposed, do we now sow and nurture? How do we make choices from the myriad of opportunities that present themselves? What will enhance our lives? Which actions are consistent with our true integrity and come from love—self-love being the greatest love of all? Which actions come from fear—the ones that will set us back, block our path, and cause us to repeat some self-limiting cycle? One way of answering these questions begins with the process of not believing our your stories. By quieting and disempowering the storyteller in yourself, you can observe yourself from various points of view. Don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements, calls the cacophony of voices in our heads Mitote - a voice of knowledge, a never-ending chatter that hooks our attention. When we observe ourselves without the Mitote, emotions are in-the-moment and inform us of the direction in which to place our energy. Simply, what feels right and what does not. Waiting to take actions until our emotions—in the absence of story—inform us of a direction is the key. Waiting for the right conditions for decision making is like waiting for the right conditions for planting seeds. Hasty or hesitant actions in either case, risk the greatest loss. As we surrender to active observation, we notice the conditions that are in harmony with our nature and Mother Nature as well. We are clear and confident in the process.
To till your personal soil, create a nurturing environment where the seeds of growth will flourish. Read a book, or listen to an inspiring CD and you may notice significant ideas that passed you by previously. Join a class on the phone, attend a workshop, meditate, find a mentor, and actively focus. In his book, The Power of Belief, Ray Dodd recommends that through practicing awareness, giving up the need to be right, and loving ourselves without limits, we nurture the seeds of love while leaving seeds based in fear unattended. If these recommendations resonate with you, read or reread The Power of Belief. Like the harbingers of spring which shine light in the direction of abundant growth, you can create an environment where the seeds of positive choice will flourish. Prepare yourself for the most glorious spring ever!
